The Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (TNSHRC), Chennai, has acknowledged and registered a complaint concerning the recent ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit in Tiruvallur district, which claimed the lives of two women workers and reportedly affected more than 62 employees.

The complaint, filed by noted social and human rights activist Dr. Tariq Zaki, National General Secretary of the World Accreditation of Human Rights (WAOHR), has been assigned Diary No. 850/IN/2026 by the Commission on 22 June 2026.

According to the acknowledgment issued by the Commission, the complaint alleges serious violations of human rights, industrial safety norms, and administrative negligence in connection with the tragic incident that occurred on 21 June 2026 in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu.

The petition seeks a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances leading to the ammonia gas leak, fixation of responsibility upon the factory management and regulatory authorities, and appropriate compensation and rehabilitation measures for the victims and their families.

Among the key reliefs sought are:

• Independent and impartial investigation into the incident;
• Accountability of factory management, labour and inspection authorities;
• Compensation of ₹25 lakh to the families of each deceased worker;
• Compensation of ₹10 lakh to seriously affected employees;
• Long-term medical treatment and rehabilitation for all victims;
• Statewide safety audit of ammonia-based and hazardous chemical industries in Tamil Nadu.

Dr. Tariq Zaki stated that industrial development must not come at the cost of workers’ lives and dignity, emphasizing that safe and healthy working conditions form an integral part of the Right to Life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

The matter is now expected to be processed by the Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission for consideration and further proceedings.
