A Century of Melody and Legacy: Celebrating Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s 100th Birth Anniversary with Renewed Honour and Assam Cabinet Commitment led by Hon’ble CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma

In the cultural and musical history of India, few names evoke as much reverence, emotion, and pride as that of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. A poet, composer, singer, filmmaker, and intellectual of extraordinary stature, Dr. Hazarika was not only the voice of Assam but also the soul of India’s Northeast, and indeed a powerful cultural ambassador of the entire subcontinent. As the state and the country gear up to celebrate his 100th birth anniversary, the occasion has taken on a historic and emotional dimension; especially under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and the pro-active Assam Cabinet, which has taken several remarkable decisions to honour the eternal legend.

This centennial year is not just a ceremonial tribute to a musical icon, but a strong political, cultural, and emotional statement: Assam has not forgotten its son. After decades of political neglect under the Congress regime, it is now, under a visionary and culturally rooted government, that Dr. Bhupen Hazarika is receiving the honour he always deserved.

A Legend Beyond Borders Born on 8th September 1926 in Sadiya, Assam, Bhupen Hazarika was a child prodigy who sang and composed music from a very young age. He earned his doctorate in Columbia University in the USA, where he also got the opportunity to interact with global legends like Paul Robeson. It was here that he imbibed the philosophy of using music as a tool for social change.

From Assamese folk to Bengali ballads, from Hindi cinema to international platforms, Bhupen Hazarika carried the essence of India’s diverse yet united cultural spirit. His songs spoke of humanity, brotherhood, equality, and the pain of the common man. Whether it was the haunting melody of “Bistirno Parore” or the philosophical depth of “Manuhe Manuhor Babe,” his music touched the hearts of millions across generations.

Congress Era: Decades of Neglect

It is deeply unfortunate that despite being such a towering personality, Dr. Hazarika was never adequately recognised during the long years of Congress rule. Though he was known across the globe and his contributions to Indian music, film, and literature were unparalleled, Congress governments at both the state and central levels failed to institutionalise his legacy.

There were no major cultural institutions built in his name, no large-scale government celebrations of his birthdays, and no significant efforts to preserve his work in a structured way. It often seemed like the Congress party did not value what he represented- a proud, assertive Assamese identity, deeply rooted in Indian values, yet bold and independent in spirit.
This negligence hurt not just his fans, but the cultural soul of Assam. People wondered if a legend like Bhupen Hazarika could be ignored, what hope was there for other artists and intellectuals from the Northeast? It was only after the change in political leadership that this historical wrong began to be corrected.

A New Dawn Under Hon’ble CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma

With the BJP-led government in Assam and Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma taking charge, a new chapter has opened in the cultural narrative of the state. Dr. Sarma, who has always been an admirer of Dr. Hazarika’s artistic legacy and socio-political vision, has made it a personal mission to honour him in a befitting manner.

On the occasion of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s 100th birth anniversary, the Assam Cabinet, under the leadership of Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, has taken several bold and historic decisions that reflect true respect and gratitude towards the legend.

Key Decisions Taken by the Assam Cabinet

  1. Year-long Celebrations: The state government has announced that the centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika will be celebrated with year-long activities not just in Assam but across India and abroad. These events will include concerts, seminars, exhibitions, documentary film screenings, and school-level competitions to spread awareness about his life and work.
  2. Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Complex: A grand cultural complex in Guwahati dedicated to Bhupen Hazarika is being developed as a world-class institution. This centre will host performances, educational programs, archival research, and cultural tourism. It will become the cultural heart of Assam in years to come.
  3. Global Recognition Initiatives: The Assam government is also actively pushing for greater international recognition for Dr. Hazarika. There is a formal proposal being sent to UNESCO to declare his birth anniversary as an international day for folk and humanist music. This is a visionary step that underlines his global relevance.
  4. University Scholarships and Chairs: To nurture future generations of artists and researchers, the government has announced scholarships and academic chairs in the name of Dr. Hazarika in leading universities, including Gauhati University and Tezpur University. These will focus on music, literature, cinema, and Northeast cultural studies.
  5. Bhupen Hazarika International Award: A prestigious new award in his name will be conferred annually to a global artist or thinker who has contributed significantly to the values that Dr. Hazarika stood for-humanity, peace, and cultural harmony.
  6. Memorials Across Assam: Every district will have a designated cultural space or auditorium named after Bhupen Hazarika, ensuring that his presence is felt in every corner of the state.
  7. Digital Archives and School Curriculum: A detailed digital archive of Dr. Hazarika’s life, music, speeches, and writings is being created. Moreover, lessons on his legacy will be included in school textbooks to inspire the younger generation.

A People’s Movement of Emotion

These steps are not mere bureaucratic actions, they have touched the emotional chord of the Assamese people. Across the state, from urban cities to rural hamlets, people are coming together to celebrate their icon. Social media is flooded with tributes, school children are singing his songs, and cultural organisations are hosting programmes in his memory.

It feels as if Assam has finally reclaimed its pride-its “Xudhakantha” (Baritone Voice) and is telling the world, “He was ours, and we shall honour him.”

BJP’s Cultural Sensitivity vs. Congress’s Political Apathy

The contrast could not be clearer. The Congress, for decades, either ignored or used Dr. Hazarika selectively for political tokenism. There were no attempts to globalise his work, no scholarships, no festivals, no digital preservation, nothing beyond lip service.

In contrast, the BJP government in Assam, under CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, has not only embraced Hazarika’s legacy but is also institutionalising it for posterity. This is not a one-time event; it is a permanent integration of his ideals into Assam’s cultural policy.

Moreover, it is this government that made sure Dr. Bhupen Hazarika received the Bharat Ratna posthumously; India’s highest civilian honour, a recognition that Congress governments never bothered to advocate for during his lifetime. It was the Narendra Modi government that showed true national gratitude to a truly national artist.

Conclusion: The Melody Lives On

As Assam celebrates 100 years of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, it is not just honouring a man- it is honouring a spirit, a voice, a movement. The decisions taken by the Assam Cabinet under the inspiring leadership of Hon’ble CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma are not only historic but emotionally resonant.

This is more than governance-it is cultural justice.

Dr. Hazarika often sang of unity, brotherhood, and the power of people’s voices. Today, the people and the government of Assam, together, are singing his song. They are writing a new chapter in the state’s history-one of pride, identity, and gratitude.
